Soft Maple Hollow Form

Every day the dogs and I walk by this downed tree. Every day I wonder if it is spalting, it is a maple after all. Two years I wondered until I finally ask the neighbor if I can have it, or at least cut into it and see. Getting the green light and hoping for spalting galore I find none. What I found is staining or discoloration throughout. Very interesting. Anyone know if this is an anomaly with soft maple? 10.5 x 6.5" soft maple finished with linseed oil and beeswax.
